Backbeat & Deceptive Promises: When a Thriller Gets Its Own Soundtrack

By Decoded Music Playlist Curation · July 2026 · ← Back to Coffee Bar Connoisseur

Most thrillers ask you to imagine the music. Backbeat, the music-industry thriller by Thomas Miller, ships with its own: Deceptive Promises, a full companion album written and produced by Rue de Vivre — the artist also known as RDV, a name that plays on the "street of life." Read a chapter, press play, and the story scores itself.

The story

Backbeat opens with two words on a burner phone: "Payment Delayed." From there it descends into the machinery of the modern music business — streaming dashboards that never quite add up, royalties that vanish into shell companies, and a private server in Malta quietly siphoning what artists are owed. At the center is Adrien Valmont, an executive whose empire runs on deceptive promises, and the small crew — including the decryption specialist Rachel Woods — determined to trace the backend, gather the evidence, and expose the fraud before they are burned. It is a story about the gap between the music you hear and the money you never see.

The soundtrack

Deceptive Promises mirrors the book's arc in sound: tense, late-night electronic passages for the investigation; soulful, deceptively warm beats for the industry's public face; and a driving backbeat underneath everything — the pulse that never lies even when everyone else does. It works as a companion listen and stands alone as an album, in the lo-fi, indie electronic, and chill R&B lanes Rue de Vivre is known for. Stream it on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube.

Play the investigation

On the Coffee Bar Connoisseur home page, the Backbeat universe is playable: an interactive investigation lets you trace the backend, recruit allies, and decide when you have enough evidence to confront Valmont — move too early and his security removes you from the building. It is a small taste of the book's central tension: patience versus exposure.
